According to The Mayo Clinic, a migraine is defined as intense throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head, possibly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and light and sound sensitivity. Migraines are diagnosed after recurring for some time and certain criteria although there is not an official test to diagnose migraines.

Common Types of Migraines

  • The most common migraine is a classic migraine. It typically comes on without warning, has severe pain on one side of the face, nausea, and light and sound sensitivity. It lasts between four and seventy-two hours.
  • The "common migraine" can sometimes have a warning called an aura. This is an aural migraine, or a complicated migraine. The first symptoms are visual disturbances, even before the pain comes. These disturbances may be partial vision blurring or complete loss, some people also report other neurological symptoms like brain fog, confusing words, and confusion. The pain may or no may not follow but in most cases, the migraine is just as painful, you just get a warning signal from your body first.
  • A migraine with no head pain may sound pleasant, but the symptoms can be scary. Like an aural migraine above, the symptoms may include varying degrees of vision loss, confusion, and fogginess. But it is often accompanied by stomach pain, nausea, extreme sensitivity, and even fainting.
  • Chronic Migraines can be any of the above types and more but occur more often on a regular, if not predictable basis. Some are associated with certain triggers, some with the weather, and some with hormone fluctuations.
